Atlus Celebrates more than 200,000 Catherines Sold in Week 1

Catherine is unique. Equal parts anime, puzzle game, horror game and dating simulator, Atlus took a big risk in bringing this title to non-Japanese shores. That’s what the publisher does, actually. And they’ve recently had fairly strong results given the niche nature of the games they deliver.

Demon’s Souls, the unbelievable hard Japanese game brought abroad by Atlus, shocked the gaming industry when it moved more than 150,000 units in its first week. Now Catherine is upping the ante.

Atlus celebrated more than 200,000 Catherine games sold during week one with cake, glorious video game cake. Atlus U.S.A. Tweeted the picture with this note:

This #Catherine cake is rated M for mmmmmm! #thiscakewillhaveashortlifespan

The premise of the game is strange, yet insanely intriguing. Players take on the role of a Japanese bachelor as he’s close to settling down with his girlfriend Katherine. He’s then greeted by two strange things: sexy Catherine and dreams where he races other sheep against an impending doom. The races are puzzles that slide from easy to insanely difficult, and the doom takes all types of horrifying shapes.

It’s funny, it’s awkward, it’s challenging and it’s brutal, Catherine has earned every sale it’s made. Japanese gamers complained the title was too tough when it first came out, so Atlus added an easier mode for play through a patch.  That mode comes built into the game that was released in the United States last week.

Catherine is currently available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
