Windows Phone Marketplace Now Home to 40,000 Apps

Windows Phone MarketplaceFollowing the launch of Nokia’s debut Windows Phone devices and the release of the company’s Windows Phone Mango update, Microsoft has more good news to celebrate: Its Windows Phone Marketplace is now home to over 40,000 applications.

While it still has a lot of catching up to do before it matches the half a million apps in Apple’s App Store, or the 370,000+ apps in Google’s Android Market, let’s not forget that Microsoft’s new smartphone operating system hasn’t been around half as long as its rivals, launching just over one year ago.

To demonstrate just how fast the Windows Phone Marketplace has grown, bear in mind that back in January the store offered just 6,000 apps. Back then it was growing by around 116 apps per day, but that has increased to around 165 per day, according to Pocket-lint.

The total app count currently stands at 40,189 from 10,371 different publishers, and we’re expecting the Marketplace to surpass 50,000 apps by the end of the year.

Its rapid growth is believed to be thanks to that popular Mango update and the growing popularity of Microsoft’s impressive Windows Mobile successor, which has undoubtedly been more popular than many of us had anticipated before its launch.

Do you think the Windows Phone Marketplace will catch up with its rivals?
