Office 2010 in Final Stages

Microsoft announced on Friday that it has finished up the development work for the next Office family.  This software suite includes Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010.

“RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone,” vice president Takeshi Numoto said in one of his blog posts.

The software was “released to manufacturing,” which is one of the final engineering steps.  It is slated to be available to businesses next month and an event is being held May 12th, 2010 in New York to announce the launch of the next Office suite.

Stand-out features of the new suite of Office products include support for browser-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote which comes free with Windows Live.  As well, desktop applications will get some updates including 64-bit support, video editing in PowerPoint and photo editing in Word.

“It is also an appropriate time to re-emphasize our sincere gratitude to the more than 5,000 organizations and partners who have worked with us on rapid deployment and testing of the products.”

Office 2010 will hit store shelves in June and Microsoft is currently taking pre-orders on its online store.  PC manufacturers will be able to load a slimmed down Office Starter for free to give consumers a taste of their products.
