YouTube Copyright Decision to be Appealed by Viacom
Viacom plans to appeal the decision that ended their lawsuit against YouTube and Google earlier this year comes very expected to everyone.
Viacom has submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York paperwork on Wednesday, stating their intention to dispute the decision over copyright materials after Google has won the victory in June. Google’s request for summary judgment was granted by Judge Louis Stanton, meaning that the dispute was never initially presented to a jury.
Stanton ruled that “YouTube was protected under safe-harbor provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that place the responsibility for informing a Web site owner that copyright material is present on the owner of that material.”
Following that ruling, Viacom stated that they would “seek to have these issues before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as soon as possible.” And that’s where the next round of legal wrangling will take place–meaning that this dispute is far from over.
