Tracking Whereabouts with Google Maps

Many applications like Foursquare or Gowalla allow users to track their footsteps online and with friends and now if that’s up your alley, Google may have a new experimental feature for you.

This new feature was unveiled on Wednesday and is available on mobile devices.  If you are in the Google Latitude location feature on Google Maps and enable Location History, you will be able to find a new report on your whereabouts in chronological order.  You can group your visits by trends like ones away from home and the feature will include map thumbnail visuals.

With privacy of such great concern, Google stresses that the feature will be the only barrier between you and your phone and will not get into the hands of the unwanted.  You can clear your history and Google will request the user for their password multiple times as a security barrier.

The Location History works with Google Maps on any mobile phone on any operating system that has the function of showing your background location, for example, Android, BlackBerry, Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile.  Presumably, when iPhone OS 4 comes out with multitasking, this feature should work as the iPhone as well.
