Google To Shut Down Labs

Google Labs is ending? Aw, I feel like I have to stifle a sniffle here. If you’re not familiar with it, Google Labs was basically an online warehouse of new product ideas — sort of like a toy store filled with prototypes that you could play with.

According to co-founder and CEO Larry Page, the company is foregoing Labs so it can streamline things and focus on better “[prioritizing] its product efforts.” Surely developing cool new features can’t be easy, and maybe a public testing ground is a little much, but shoot — it sure was fun while it lasted.

For now, experimental projects for Search, Maps, Android and others are still in here, but it won’t be long before the mad laboratory gets shut down for good. Some of the items will probably get tossed altogether, while others make their way into actual products. Well, at least it’s not a total loss. And Google is quick to point out that the Android projects (those that exist as apps, that is) will still be available from the Android Market.

Anyone else going to miss Google Labs? To say your goodbyes, you can click here to take your final tour around the old laboratory.
