Wow: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Only on 2.9% of All Devices
Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update is so old we honestly had to look back to when it was officially announced before we wrote this story. As it turns out, however, Google officially launched ICS in October of last year, about six months ago. But even still, the operating system is only installed on 2.9% of all Android devices, according to a recent Android distribution chart from Google. Kind of crazy, considering Android 5.0 Jelly Bean could be announced during Google I/O this summer.
According to Google, just 2.4% of all Android users are running Android 4.0.3 — Android 4.0.4 was released just a few days ago — and 0.5% of Android’s installed base are running Android 4.0 – Android 4.0.2. 3.3% of Android users have a Honeycomb device, 63.7 are running Gingerbread, 23.1% are still running Froyo, 6% have Eclair installed, 0.7% are running Donut and 0.3% are running Android 1.5 Cupcake.
It is, of course, up to manufacturers to update devices to the latest Android build and a device needs software approval from a wireless carrier first, too. That’s why we’re always dealing with delays and long launch times for the latest Android update. Still, a 2.9% adoption figure is rather pathetic for a year-old operating system.
