What’s this? An Android-powered camera from Polaroid? You bet it is! At CES in Las Vegas today, Polaroid announced its new 16-megapixel SC1630 Smart Camera, featuring a 3x optical zoom lens, a 3.2-inch touch-based display, and Wi-Fi capabilities that promise to merge “the optics of a digital still and video camera with the limitless power of the Android platform.”

Arguably its most exciting feature, however, is its Android user interface. By building Google’s mobile operating system into its five-ounce portable, Polaroid has provided Smart Camera photographers with the opportunity to upload their shots directly to social networking sites like Facebook, Google+, and Twitter.

The SC1630 offers 18 different scene modes, captured at 36mm or full 108mm magnification, and a number of built-in editing features, such as cropping, red-eye removal, resizing, and color correction.

Furthermore, because the Android Market is right at your fingertips, you can take advantage of a multitude of terrific photography applications that will allow you to edit and transform your photos on the go — without getting a computer involved. Polaroid says the SC1630 with Android “evolves the process of clicking, editing, uploading and tagging to an instant experience on one device.”

The company claims you can “link up with more than 400,000 apps,” suggesting that the SC1630 isn’t restricted to certain supported applications. That means that you finally have Angry Birds on your camera, folks!

Unfortunately, Polaroid is yet to offer us a price, and the only release date we have at this point is “2012.” We’re hoping to hear more about the SC1630 in the coming months, however.
