LG Announces the DoublePlay 4G Android Smartphone for T-Mobile
LG has today announced its latest 4G smartphone built exclusively for T-Mobile. The LG DoublePlay is an Android-powered handset that claims to be the “ultimate multitasking smartphone,” with dual touch screens that allow users to simultaneously email, text, browse the web, stay connected to their favorite social networks, and more.
Not only is there two touch screens (one 3.5-inch, one 2-inch), but the DoublePlay features a full QWERTY keyboard with physical keys; a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, an LED flash, and 720p HD video recording; and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor which powers that Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The software is optimized for the DoublePlay so that users can take advantage of both displays either in tandem, with one app running on both displays, or independently, with an app dedicated to each display.
The DoublePlay is expected to launch in time for this year’s holiday season and will be bundled with LG’s Cloud Text and Group Text applications that allow users to send and receive texts on a PC or tablet, or create group chats on-the-go for faster content sharing.
The DoublePlay is certainly an interesting concept, slightly similar to that of Sony’s new Tablet P, which also features two touch displays. I can certainly see how those dual displays would be useful, especially if developers create applications that make good use of that second display. However, I do think the novelty will wear off fairly quickly.
