Google’s Andy Rubin Announces 3.7 Million Android Activations Over Christmas Weekend
2011 has been a fantastic year for Google’s Android operating system, and it’s just been topped off by a hugely successful Christmas. Having pushed out its latest Ice Cream Sandwich update back in October, the search giant announced just a week ago that it was now seeing 700,000 Android activations each and every day. Over the Christmas weekend, however, that number soared as we unwrapped stacks of new Android devices.
Google’s Android chief Andy Rubin has revealed in a short post on Google+ that the company saw a staggering 3.7 million Android device activations on December 24 and December 25 alone. He also congratulated his Android team:
“There were 3.7M Android activations on 12/24 and 12/25. Congrats team-Android!”
This follows yesterday’s report from analytics firm Flurry, which revealed that new Android and iOS device activations increased by 353% on Christmas Day, with around 6.8 million mobile devices booted up for the first time. That’s a very impressive increase over last year, which saw just 2.8 million device activations on December 25.
Android adoption has been growing rapidly over the course of the last 18 months, so it seemed inevitable that the mobile OS would be popular this Christmas. Back in August 2010, Google was seeing just 200,000 Android activations a day. That figure steadily rose to 500,000 by July 2011, but by December 21, it had rocketed to over 700,000.
And, of course, that has lead to some pretty impressive growth for the Android Market, which surpassed 10 billion downloads earlier this month, with an average of 53 apps installed on each Android device.
