The Apple Campus Having A Verizon Tower Means Nothing

During the iPhone 4 apology press conference, Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a comment during the question and answer session that has sent some Apple bloggers into a tizzy.

Macworld caught the comment in its coverage of the event, and in this screen image you can see why people are going nuts.

A lot of people have jumped to the conclusion this is some sort of evidence that Apple is finally testing a Verizon iPhone, but I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but my guess is that this is a totally innocent situation.

Next time you are in an industrial area, take a look up at the corners of buildings.  See a tall hotel in a mostly residential area?  Look up at the corners of the buildings.  It is not uncommon for cell phone companies to lease space on sides of buildings to place cell equipment there as it saves them the cost and time of constructing their own towers, and it helps the property owners offset operating costs of their buildings.

I wouldn’t read a bit of future product news into this tidbit of info.  There is a cell tower for Verizon on Apple’s campus … and dozens of others industrial campuses across this nation.

What say you?  Did you think it meant something?
