OLED Display on Next-Gen iPad?

Rumors leaked on Monday show that Apple has reportedly started the development for the second generation iPad model and putting aside all the new features that will sugarcoat it, the next-gen iPad will receive an OLED display.

DigiTimes reported that OLED display prices are foreshadowed to narrow dramatically in 2010-2011, making a more comfortable price range for the iPad.

Currently, prices for an OLED panel run from about $500 a panel, putting a lot of doubt on this rumor.

“Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo is conservative about the idea of iPads with OLED panels. He pointed out that OLED panels’ high price will still be the major obstacle for them to be adopted in the iPad in 2011.”

In comparison, a LCD panel display runs around $60 – $70.

“…the current price of the 9.7-inch LCD panel for iPad is about US$60-70, but the price of a 9.7-inch OLED panel is about US$500. He said the price gap is unlikely to narrow significantly in 2010 or 2011.”

Obviously, this is all still mere speculation and what is foreseen now can change in a very drastic degree in one year.  Like with any set of rumors, for any device, you take them with a grain of salt.
