LG and Samsung Quality Testing iPad Retina Display For Apple?

iPad 2 Review ConclusionCould the next iPad see a retina display? The Korea Times is reporting this morning that Apple is working with Samsung and LG on creating iPad displays with a 2048×1536 resolution, doubling the resolution of the current display on the tablet. The tablet would still have a slightly lower quality resolution than the current iPhone, but the display might still be considered a “retina” display.

Apple has started quality testing Samsung and LG’s LCDs at one of its laboratories in China. Samsung and LG were required to produce screens with better picture quality and density, according to sources, who anticipate the testing process will be completed during the third quarter.”

Should the testing phase of the production finish this quarter, there’s a chance that Apple could release the rumored iPad 2 Plus or even an iPad 3 by the holiday season.

Images at a 2048×1536 resolution were found in the beta of iOS 5. Even if we don’t see an iPad 2Plus/3 by the holidays, it’s likely that one is in fact in the works.

What do you think? Will we see a new iPad this year? Will it be an iPad 2 Plus with just better screen, or an iPad 3 with a full spec makeover?
