Sprint’s iPhone 5 Will Have Unlimited Data

In a move that is certainly tailored to take a bite out of the emerging AT&T/Verizon duopoly, Sprint will be offering the iPhone 5 with an unlimited data plan. Bloomberg interviewed Matthew Thornton, an analyst at Avian Securities LLC, who said the following:

“It’s a competitive disadvantage if your two larger competitors have the iPhone and you don’t. Getting the iPhone closes that gap.”

A gap the size of the Grand Canyon, to be more realistic, for Sprint has been losing capital steadily for 15 straight quarters, according to the report. This is a win for data-chomping Netflix, Pandora and mobile Internet addicts, and the security of a fixed monthly fee is far more reassuring than tiptoeing around a 4GB/$45-per-month AT&T plan or 10GB/$80-per-month Verizon plan. I remember when AT&T offered a no questions asked $30 Unlimited plan, and I am one of the lucky ones to be grandfathered into that deal.

The Sprint iPhone 5 will be particularly alluring to those who are heavy on their data usage, and it will certainly make free agents think twice before they sign a 2-year contract in blood. The popularity of the iPhone is unprecedented, despite what Android fanboys and the like will spout. The report goes on to say the following:

“Of the 5.6 million smartphones AT&T sold in the second quarter, the device accounted for 3.6 million. A quarter of the subscribers who bought the iPhone were new to AT&T, the company said.”

The iPhone is hot. You can’t stop it–you can only hope to contain it. Will anyone be switching to Sprint for an iPhone 5 because of the Unlimited Data?
