iPhone 4 Explodes On Australian Airplane

You’re seated on an airplane as the flight attendants tell everyone to pull up their seatbacks and tray tables. Excellent, you think to yourself, as the flight touches down. You’re already anticipating the long, luscious leg-stretch that awaits you once you deboard. But then suddenly, there’s a funny smell. You look over and see a dense waft of smoke and a glowing red light.

Unnerved? Well, who wouldn’t be? Certainly the passengers of Regional Express flight ZL319 were when they experienced this very thing in Sydney, Australia last Friday. Turns out, the culprit was a last-gen iPhone 4 that somehow got all jacked up and basically imploded. Luckily, a quick-thinking flight attendant jumped on this, extinguishing the phone quickly.

A couple years back, random iPhone users in France had reported exploding devices, but when a gadget combusts on an airplane, it’s a whole other issue. The smartphone was seized by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, pending further investigation. No details on what could’ve caused this particular meltdown have been released yet.

What do you think this could be? Some sort of epic hardware failure, a side effect of some innocuous hackery, or could it be a botched attempt at something more sinister?
