iOS 5 To Include Earthquake Warnings For Japanese iPhone Users

If you live in Japan then iOS 5 is going to come with something a little extra for you – an earthquake alert. The alert can be turned on from the Notifications menu, and is connected to Japan’s earthquake detection system. The warning system can let you know that an earthquake is coming, anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes in advance – an important time to make sure you and your loved ones are safe.

The feature depletes battery life (because it is constantly connected to and communicating with the warning system), but that seems like a reasonable price to pay for safety.

Currently Japan’s earthquake detection system detects tremors and sends out warnings to around 1,000 seismographs scattered throughout the country. Japanese iPhone users can also download 3rd-party applications to receive earthquake alerts.

What do you think about Apple choosing to include the notifications? What other warnings would you like to see included in iOS 5?
