One of the biggest selling points for the iPhone 4S, after Siri, of course, is the introduction of a new 8-megapixel camera. It’s a custom lens built specifically for Apple’s new iPhone, with a larger f/2.4 aperture, an improved backside illumination sensor, and all-new optics.

At 8-megapixels, the new iPhone takes pictures with 60% more pixels that the iPhone 4, which has a 5-megapixel camera. The results are stunning, and to prove it, Apple has published a photo gallery of images taken on the new device.

We’ve embedded a couple into this post, but go check out the full gallery — with images that aren’t cropped — over on Apple’s website. I can’t believe this images were taken on a smartphone. Can you?
