iPad 3 Will Be Thicker, Says Macotakara

iPad 3Last month, a rumor out of DigiTimes claimed that Apple’s next iteration of its iPad would come with a Retina-like display, but at the cost of a slightly thicker form factor. A similar rumor has hit today from Japanese blog Macotakara, echoing the same opinion.

Apparently, Macotakara has received information from an Asian supplier with knowledge of the unannounced product, saying the next iPad may be thicker, while the screen will still retain its current physical dimensions. If this is true, the blog says, current iPad 2 cases will be incompatible with the iPad 3, however, the Smart Cover should still work.

As MacRumors points out, the Japanese blog has been hit or miss with its Apple information as of late, so take this with a grain of salt.

Is the above image of a prototype iPad 3 case? Your guess is as good as ours. If the next iPad does come with a better screen and faster internals at the expense of a thicker form factor, I certainly wouldn’t mind. Compared to the first iPad, the iPad 2 feels a little too thin. We’ll certainly find out in due time. If Apple keeps to its previous release schedule, it won’t be long until we see the fabled iPad 3 for real.
