Best Buy Customer Survey Details “42-inch Apple HDTV for $1499″ [UPDATED]

Best Buy Apple HDTVIt’s not just consumers who are dreaming of an Apple HDTV; it seems major retailers are fantasizing about the possibility of an Apple branded set as well. The Verge has uncovered a slide from Best Buy in which the electronics retailer queries customers about “the all new 42-inch Apple HDTV for $1499. Apple finally reinvents what a TV can do.” Does this confirm its existence?

Well, no. Best Buy is merely guesstimating what the retailer believes will show up if Apple were to release a physical TV, and shouldn’t be taken as fact. The slide says, “Incorporates Apple’s operating system (iOS); download and use apps from the App Store; supports Apple’s new iCloud; use your iPad or iPhone as a remote control,” among other things. Interestingly, the slide points to Skype integration via the TV’s iSight camera, rather than any mention of FaceTime. And even more interesting is the absence of Siri, which has been said to be “souped-up” for Apple’s HDTV.

Television was reportedly a frontier Steve Jobs wanted to change forever, something the late CEO said he “finally cracked.” We recently saw his vision of reshaping the textbook industry with the introduction of iBooks 2 and iBooks Author, so one would suspect a legitimate Apple HDTV is on the way. When exactly that will be is still up in the air, although TechnoBuffalo stands behind a story we ran late last month.

UPDATE: Best Buy issued the following statement to Wired: “The customer survey was a routine offer effectiveness survey conducted by one of Best Buy’s research partners. Any brand reference was hypothetical. The survey is no longer available.”
