Apple’s MacBook Air Estimated to Become $7 Billion Revenue Driver

MacBook Air 2011 ChartsThe iPhone and iPad product lines weren’t Apple’s only hot items in 2011. According to JP Morgan’s Mark Moskowitz, the Cupertino-based company’s MacBook Air is fast becoming one of its top selling products, growing quarter over quarter for the fourth time in a row.

Moskowitz calculated that Apple sold 923,000 MacBook Air units during Q3, up 44% over the previous quarter. When you consider the average price of the Air at $1,150, it works out to be nearly $1.86 billion per quarter in revenue for Apple.

As a result, Moskowitz predicts the MacBook Air could become a $7 billion-plus revenue driver per year in the coming months, nothing that unit growth accelerated for the fourth straight quarter in Q3. In comparison, Apple’s Mac units grew 17% during quarter-to-quarter growth.

“Over the next 12 months, we believe that the average quarterly run rate could reach 1.6M units, which implies a $7 billion-plus revenue profile,” Moskowitz said.

With continued expansion in China, Moskowitz believes Apple’s MacBook Air will boost Mac growth and deepen market coverage. In addition, Moskowitz said “Ultrabook” offerings promoted by Intel won’t pose any viable threat, as they lack “the right blend of features and attractive price points to grab the market share.”

Could these figures pave the way for that rumored MacBook Pro redesign? We’ll have to wait and see as the new year is just around the corner.
