Apple Updates iBooks App To Add Nighttime Reading Theme, New Fonts & More
Apple has issued an update to its popular iBooks application for iOS devices today, introducing some great new features that include a much-needed nighttime reading theme, a number of new fonts, full-screen viewing mode, and more.
Version 1.5 of the iBooks app, which is available to download from the App Store now, should significantly improve your reading experience on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. For those who like to read in bed at night, the new nighttime reading mode — which I’ve been crying out for for ages — means you can now read in the dark without melting your retinas or waking up your other half.
The new full-screen layout allows you to read without distraction, according to Apple, by removing the status bar at the top of your display and allowing you to focus only on your book. You can also choose from an improved selection of fonts, including Athelas, Charter, Iowan, and Seravek.
For public domain books, Apple has introduced a fancy new classic cover design; and a redesigned annotation palette that makes it easier to choose different colors for your highlighted text. Finally, the update also introduces support for pop-up footnotes, which are included in selected iBookstore titles.
I think the iBooks app already offered a terrific experience — on the iPad especially — but these improvements will make it all the more enjoyable.
