Apple Prepares for Thunderbolt Display With MacBook Air Firmware Update
So… despite recent rumors that Apple’s new Thunderbolt Display would be here by now, we’re still waiting for the device to start shipping. However, one promising sign that its release is imminent comes in the form of an EFI firmware update for the company’s latest line of MacBook Airs, which prepares the ultraportables for the new display.
The ‘MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.1′ weighs in at 3.9MB and is available now via Software Update on your Mac. You will, of course, need one of the latest MacBook Airs — those equipped with a Thunderbolt port — to get the update.
Apple says you’ll need to install this if you want your machine to play nicely with the Thunderbolt Display — and a number of other things — when it launches:
This update includes fixes that enhance the stability of Lion Recovery from an Internet connection, and resolve issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance on MacBook Air (mid 2011) models.
While those rumors last week may have been a little off target, this update is a very good indication that the Thunderbolt Display is finally nearing release. When Apple announced the device back in July, it promised shipping would begin “within 60 days,” and that timeframe isn’t too far away now.
