Dave Ranyard, a PlayStation veteran of nearly 17 years and a lead developer for PlayStation VR, has left the company. He leaves Sony’s London Studio, a group of developers working on games like The Deep and The London Heist for PS VR.

Gamasutra has it that Ranyard has elected to leave in order to start up an independent career specifically in the virtual reality field.

Ranyard offered that he might work on PlayStation VR down the line, but that he would do so in an independent capacity. He went on to talk about the new medium itself.

“2016 is going to be the year of VR, so it’s the perfect time for me to take this step into independent development…The emergence of a new medium like VR doesn’t come along very often and I really want to be a part of this new world.”

Ranyard might have simply elected to leave Sony now that the hardest engineering work was done. We wish him the best, and can’t wait to see what he makes for VR.
