Although we already know Hulk will appear in Thor: Ragnarok, we’re not actually sure how he’ll be introduced. Last time we saw Hulk he was flying off to parts unknown in the Quinjet, escaping from the Avengers group so he wouldn’t do any further harm. But after that, where does he go? And how does he end up in space?
We still don’t have those answers, but we do know what he’ll be doing when he gets there.
Many people have expressed their desire to see Marvel follow the Planet Hulk storyline, in which he becomes a gladiator on planet Sakaar after being “fixed” with an obedience disk. He essentially becomes a brainwashed lackey, fighting battles for the entertainment of the Red King.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Hulk will apparently be a popular gladiator, as he was in Planet Hulk, and he’ll have to face off against Thor at some point during the movie. But how does Thor get there?
According to Geek, Thor will wind up being banished from Asgard by Loki and Hela (rumored to be played by Cate Blanchett), eventually winding up on the same planet where Hulk has become a gladiator. During the course of the film, Thor becomes a formidable gladiator in his own right (sans Mjolnir), unaware that Hulk is on the planet, until the two are finally put into the arena at the same time.
At this point Hulk hasn’t reverted back to Bruce Banner because of the obedience disk. However, Banner’s personality will have apparently begun to unite with Hulk’s, causing him to remember Thor. This will lead to the two teaming up—in the process breaking their obedience disks—sending them on a Midnight Run-esque adventure Mark Ruffalo keeps talking about.
The final script and shooting schedule for the film allegedly hasn’t been finalized yet, which means the information above could change by the time the movie comes out. That said, I really hope Marvel goes through with a film similar to what’s above, because Ragnarok sounds like it could be one of the more exciting Phase 3 movies, and a perfect way to include the Planet Hulk storyline everyone has been hoping to see.
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to come out on Nov. 3, 2017.
