Facebook just launched its latest assault at Snapchat in the form of its Slingshot app, but the ephemeral messaging giant clearly isn’t ready to give up its throne. In response, Snapchat launched Our Story, a new feature that let’s you collaborate with nearby people at an event to create a disposable collection of photos and videos.
Our Story builds off of My Story, which let one person string together a series of photos and videos for all of their friends to see. Snapchat will start its “Our Story” roll-out by setting up official public stories. For example, anyone at the Electric Daisy Carnival this weekend can sign in and upload their own content from the music festival. You’ll be able to view photos and videos from the event in one place, even if you can’t make it. The company will presumably offer Our Stories for similar events in the future as well.
Snapchat’s new feature has a ton of potential, and it helps show how unique the app really is despite the growing number of competitors trying to cash in on the ephemeral messaging craze. We’d love to see Our Story open up in the future so anyone can set one up to share photos and videos with a specific group of friends or with anyone at a public event, though this new feature is still pretty cool in its current form.
