Owners of the original Galaxy Gear: Samsung on Friday introduced an update that extracts every trace of Android from the smartwatch, instead replacing it with Tizen. Not a surprise given Samsung ditched Android in favor of its own homebred solution for the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.
The new update, according to SamMobile, introduces not just Tizen, but some great new features, including a standalone music player, voice commands for the camera and improved battery life. All features that should have been there from the get-go, but better late than never. Once the update is installed, the original Gear’s functionality should more closely mimic what you’d get with Samsung’s most recent smartwatches.
So would this still be considered the Galaxy Gear? Just Gear? In any case, all you brave owners of Samsung’s first attempt at the smart watch can get on the Tizen train. Just a word of warning: some apps reportedly won’t work after the update is installed, so you might want to hold off for the time being until all the kinks are ironed out. Additionally, all your information will be wiped when making the switch to Tizen, giving you yet another reason to refrain.
You can install the update via Samsung Kies.
