We’ve pretty much come to accept that Apple will buy Beats Electronics for several billion dollars, but for the time being both company’s have refrained from commenting on the rumors in any official manner. Now we’re hearing the deal could be confirmed next week, while Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will appear onstage at WWDC 2014, Billboard reports.
Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) is generally focused on preparing software developers for upcoming changes to Apple’s desktop and mobile operating systems, though the company has also used the annaul event to make product announcements. Last year CEO Tim Cook unveiled iTunes Radio, for example, so perhaps this year the company will explain its reason for acquiring Beats Electronics.
Iovine and Dr. Dre are both expected to take on executive roles as part of the deal, with the former taking over Apple’s music division. It’s unclear what Dr. Dre’s role with the Cupertino company could be. It’s still a mystery why Apple wants Beats in the first place, though the company’s headphone and music streaming business both represent potential areas of growth for Cupertino.
