apple earpods secret fake

Last week an anonymous post on Secret claimed to reveal Apple’s plans for biometric EarPods that could measure your heart rate and blood pressure. The rumor played off expectations that Cupertino would enter the fitness tracking market this year and even matched up with an older Apple patent. In a not-so-surprising twist, it turns out the alleged leaker actually made the entire thing up. That’s why we take these sorts of reports with a grain of salt – even when Apple has patented the technology (the person on Secret had no idea of that).

In an anonymous post shared on Tumblr, the leaker confessed to anonymously lying online. It turns out the writer never even worked at Apple, instead noting they had been “messing around with Secret as an outlet for comedy.” He or she goes on to note that they never expected the post to get any further than their own small circle of friends, and apologized for making the company “look like jerks.”

Based on today’s revelations, the chances of Apple unveiling a new set of EarPods capable of measuring your heart rate any time soon is pretty unlikely. The company is still expected to jump into the fitness market this year, but that push will likely take the form of a new Healthbook app and a sensor-packed smartwatch.

As for Secret, the anonymous social media platform still has a decent track record for breaking news, but it just goes to show that you can’t believe everything you read online.
