Dead Space

Following in suit with Xbox Live’s Games with Gold and the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection, EA’s digital distribution channel, Origin, is now offering a new On The House promotion. “Full games, expansions, and more” will be available for free for a set period of time, and EA is getting the ball rolling with its hit survival-horror game, Dead Space.

Typically $20, you can pick up the game for nothing until May 8. Of course, you’ll have to download and install Origin, a problem that many games will have difficulty overcoming. It remains uncertain if the time frame will be a set thing for the On The House deal, so we’ll have to wait until May 8 to find out.

Dead Space was one of my favorite games of the last generation, capitalizing on the success of Resident Evil 4 and improving it in ways both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 could barely dream of. Of course, it is also six years old, meaning that EA is playing more toward the Microsoft route of free content than the Sony route, delivering dated software that you might already own two or three times over.

I’ve purchased Dead Space three times over: once on the Xbox 360, once when I shifted my console of choice to the PlayStation 3, and once when it appeared in the Humble Origin Bundle. I claimed it through Steam though. I don’t know if I need it for free through Origin or not, so I’ll wait and see if EA can entice me with something else before jumping aboard.
