There are a million ways to send a message online, but what if you want a totally anonymous and private experience? There are already a few options out there, but Tor Project developers are working on an exciting new one that could be bundled in with the popular anonymous Internet browser.
The new project was spotted by Re/code after documents detailing a meeting focused on the anonymous messenger were posted to Tor’s website. The post notes that a small group of Tor developers are “actively interested” in the project so it may not be long before the new service rolls out.
Tor itself has a bit of a reputation already, mostly for offering access to some questionable or illegal parts of the Internet on the Deep Web. The anonymous browser was used to access Silk Road before the online marketplace was shutdown. That doesn’t mean most people using Tor are breaking the law though, and hopefully an instant messenger can help improve the software’s public image.
