Re/code reports that Comcast and Netflix have reached a deal that will ensure Netflix subscribers get the best possible streaming experience going forward. Terms haven’t been disclosed, but the bottom line is that consumers should ultimately benefit. Reports have suggested Comcast (and other cable providers) have been throttling Netflix content because of cost disagreements; the deal focused on the in-between area that shuttles Netflix content to Comcast—neither Netflix or Comcast could agree which company would front those rising costs, but it appears negotiations have smoothed everything over.
No terms have been disclosed, though sources claim money is definitely involved, known in business terminology as a “transit agreement.” The engineering process apparently hasn’t been finished, but customers are already noting better quality. Netflix customers have ben especially active lately because of the arrival of House of Cards season 2. Now you don’t need to worry about streaming in poor quality. Both companies released a statement saying an agreement has been reached, and will ensure Comcast customers will get a “high-quality Netflix video experience for years to come.”
Hopefully this doesn’t mean Netflix rates are going to go up. “Netflix receives no preferential network treatment under the multi-year agreement,” the statement read. Verizon has been called out as another provider slowing down Netflix content, so hopefully Netflix can come to terms with other providers.
Comcast is currently the biggest broadband provider in the U.S., serving over 24 million customers. This deal has apparently been in the works for over a year, and comes at a time when net neutrality issues are in the media. The deal doesn’t have anything to do with that, though it sure gives us a small glimpse of the kind of power broadband providers have. At least your Netflix content isn’t being slowed down—for now.
