password

A list of passwords compiled by SplashData show just how silly and uncreative our passwords can be—even in 2013, when people should know better. In this day and age, most websites require you to use a capital letter, symbol and number. But in the instances you don’t need to, it’s never a good idea to make your password “123456,” which is the number one most used password according to the gathered data; the password information organized by SplashData, by the way, was from stolen passwords—a lot of that went on last year—made public throughout 2013. The word “password” was the number two most used password.

The entire list includes 25 of the most common passwords from last year, and most of them deal with numbered variations that are incredibly simple to guess. “12345678” is number three, while “123456789” is number six. People get even less creative than that, using “qwerty,” “iloveyou” and “sunshine” as their keys to accessing personal information. Newcomers to SplashData’s list include “adobe123” and “photoshop,” which may relate to the Adobe data breach from last October. Pro tip: don’t use the name of the product you’re using as your password.

Another pro tip: don’t use any of these terrible passwords. If you’re concerned about remembering your multiple logins, I highly recommend an application like 1Password; it’s worth the investment—if you don’t want to pay the full amount, the software goes on sale often. Or if you don’t decide to pick up software like 1Password, at least make your password into a phrase (your favorite movie quote, song lyrics, etc.) so there’s less of a possibility of you getting hacked. Whatever you do, don’t use “princess” as your Facebook password.
