If you were part of the massive horde who signed up for the Steam Machines beta, completed the requirements and were lucky enough to be chosen by Valve, you’ll be receiving your free Steam Machine test console sometime soon.
Valve has selected 300 beta participants. Those folks will be notified by 2 p.m. Pacific today about the upcoming arrival of their new gaming device. The consoles will be shipped on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013.
Unfortunately, the beta had to be limited to the U.S. only. Valve dropped that bit of news in their announcement.
We’ve had to make the difficult decision to limit our beta to the U.S. only, because of regulatory hurdles. This was not our original plan, and it means we can’t collect beta feedback from Steam customers world-wide, which is pretty unfortunate. All things considered, we’re sure it was the right decision, because the alternative was to delay the whole beta beyond the point when we’d be able to incorporate any feedback into the 2014 products. This decision only affects Valve’s 300 prototype units; the commercial versions of Steam Machines that are for sale in 2014 won’t be affected by this. More information on those will be announced at CES on January 6.
The 300 folks that will receive beta Steam Machines will also enjoy a few more minor perks. They’ll have a few games that run natively in Steam OS added to their library, and they’ll get a special Steam Machine beta badge for their community profile.
Check your inboxes after 2 p.m. Pacific, folks. Let us know if you were lucky enough to land a Steam Machine.
