Apple’s iPad Air was the most sought after consumer electronic item over Black Friday weekend. According to data from Localytics, activations of the redesigned iPad rose by 51 percent compared to the weekend before, likely owing to some big deals many retailers were holding. Apple actually held the top three spots—the iPad Air, iPad mini and iPhone 5c—and the majority of new device growth overall, underlining the Cupertino company’s immense popularity. With the holidays fast approaching, that figure will likely be on the rise even more.
Sales of Apple’s four most recent devices—iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina, iPhone 5s and iPhone5c—all grew quite a bit this past weekend compared to the previous week, with the previous iPad mini also holding its own. The closest competitor, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7, sale an increase in sales over the previous week of about 23 percent, while Samsung’s Galaxy S4 shot up an even 20 percent. No devices from HTC, Motorola or Google made the list; Apple’s iPhone 4s also grew about ten percent, likely gaining interest from first-time smartphone buyers.
To put these figures in perspective, Localytics collected its data by comparing the activations of more than one million devices in the U.S. compared to the previous weekend. Combined with deals and gift card giveaways, it appears Apple devices were definitely among the most popular during Black Friday weekend.
As a little anecdote, I braved Target when it opened last Friday, and there was a huge line sectioned off in electronics specifically for Apple products.
