Wii Party U - Wii U - Official Screenshots - Nintendo - 003

Thanks to the release of a Wii Party U bundle in Japan, the Wii U enjoyed a weekly sales jump of almost 1400%. The system went from 2,598 sold all the way to 38,802.

The data comes from Media Create, a sales tracking company in Japan.

Let’s look at the numbers. Just for the sake of clarity, 3DS LL is what Japan labels the Nintendo 3DS XL. Media Create charts the sales of both the LL and standard SKU.

We’ll start with the week of October 21st through 27th. Pay attention to the Wii U’s starting line.

  1. Nintendo 3DS LL - 69,001
  2. Nintendo 3DS - 40,507
  3. PS Vita - 24,513
  4. PlayStation 3 - 11,460
  5. PSP - 3,807
  6. Wii U - 2,598
  7. Wii - 742
  8. Xbox 360 - 351

Yep, the Wii U was selling so poorly that the PSP was beating it. Now, how about this past week of October 28th through November 3rd? Here we go.

  1. Nintendo 3DS LL – 58,627
  2. Wii U – 38,802
  3. Nintendo 3DS – 29,749
  4. PS Vita – 27,618
  5. PlayStation 3 – 11,148
  6. PSP – 3,680
  7. Wii – 477
  8. Xbox 360 – 328

With the upcoming release of Super Mario 3D World, there’s a strong chance Nintendo can hold on to this momentum in Japan. We’ll see how the system does in the coming months.
