Facebook on Monday announced new tools that will allow news networks to show what people are discussing on Facebook in real time. That means they can see, and publish, what people are saying about major events, whether it’s about a big political speech, a hit TV show or a big sports game.
As part of the announcement, Facebook said that between 88 and 100 million people typically log on to the network between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. and that, during the Super Bowl, about 245 million people were logged-in to the social network. Similarly, 125 million people were logged on during the NBA finals, 66.5 million people were on during the Oscars, and 10 million people logged on to talk about Shark Week.
“Starting today, selected news organizations can begin to integrate Facebook conversations into their broadcasts or coverage by displaying public posts of real-time activity about any given topic,” Facebook explained. “CNN’s New Day can now easily incorporate what people on Facebook have to say about the latest, breaking news event during their show.”
Initial partners include CNN, NBC’s Today Show, BSkyB, Slate and Buzzfeed. Media outlets will be able to narrow down to a specific word mentioned, such as “Football,” for example, and filter through age groups and gender. The tools are called Keyword Insights API and the Public Feed API.
