Remember that Capcom exclusive for the PlayStation 4, deep down, we confused for being the sequel for its 2012 sleeper-hit Dragon’s Dogma? Well we were totally wrong. Capcom Producer Yoshinori Ono took to the stage at a Sony PlayStation Conference in Japan and announced several shocking details about the game. Our fantasy set expectations could not have been further from the truth.
First and foremost, this game does not take place in a fantasy world at all, nor does it take place in the past. In fact, it takes place in our world in the year 2094. I guess medieval monsters and dragon’s have taken Earth to the breaking point, making the futuristic New York City seem more like the most horrific fantasy novel imaginable.
Knights, monsters, swords, armor, magic and dragons, all taking place both above and below 110th Street. Who would have thought?
Ono also announced the game’s incredibly claustrophobic dungeons are 100 percent randomly generated, and no two dungeon crawls will ever be the same. No maps to help you escape the frightening underbelly of the Big Apple, nor a guaranteed route to safety. Each dive into the darkness must be taken as it is given with little to zero preparation.
Expect a few nods from one of our biggest AAA franchises in the storytelling department though. Much of the game’s storyline will involve jumping into a fellow human’s minds and living out history through his memories and surrounding objects.
Aside from the obvious nod to Assassin’s Creed, deep down looks like a terrifying game and I’m anxious to see how well Capcom can pull it off with its new Panta Rhei graphics engine. A demo will be available at TGS, so expect impressions from the Tokyo Game Show floor next week on August 19th and 20th.
Deep down has no official release date yet, but it will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
