Outlast has come from out of the darkness as the next big indie survival-horror game to shake up the scene. No weapons, no fighting back; just straight up running for your life through a twisted hell of an insane asylum.

The launch trailer provides some genuinely frightening scares to entice those interested in Red Barrels’ grassroots first-person mind-bender. Fiery hallways from hell, explosions sending you down two stories on your back, mutated insane people out to chew your face off, glowing eyes in the dark…it’s all there. Someone is not going to be able to sleep well tonight, and you’re reading his article right now.

What’s even more depressing is maybe these flashing glimpses are not even real to the protagonist and are really just the imagination of a mutant scientist who has you strapped to a table.

I don’t know what’s worse. Experiencing these horrific dreams, or waking up from them just to realize that reality is more horrible.

Outlast is going to mess with your head, there is no getting around that. Guns are slowly losing credibility in the realm of survival horror, and they are being replaced with more genuinely frightening atmospheres and disorienting camera shaking.

Survival-horror is coming back in a big way, and it takes games like Outlast to make it happen. Check it out on PC’s today, or give it a look when it launches for the PlayStation 4 in 2014.
