Remember those screenshots teased by Just Cause 2 developer Avalanche Studios back in February? The entire Internet, including myself, interpreted them as teaser shots for the upcoming Just Cause 3 set in a different time period.
However, it appears we have all had sand thrown in our eyes. Avalanche Studios founder Christofer Sundberg has stated in an interview with Edge that the shots are actually from a “steampunk-style game” that has been “put on ice.”
“I really love that art style, and to combine it with sandbox gameplay is a dream of mine. Fortunately, being an independent developer I can control my own destiny and we’ll make something in that world sooner or later.”
Sunberg stated when the screenshots were released, the game would be shown at E3. However, that no longer appears to be the case.
Always a colorful character, Sunberg could also just be toying with us again. He does not state that the screenshots are NOT of Just Cause 3 or a former build at least, and he also refused to mention anything on Avalanche’s widely rumored Mad Max game.
I’m still calling it the similarities in gameplay themes too close to be coincidental. Maybe Square Enix disagreed with the new art direction and demanded a change.
At any rate, we are huge fans of Avalanche Studios and Just Cause 2 and are more than excited for its upcoming next-gen game at E3 this year. We hope it shows up in some form or another.
