The sound you hear right now is the collective booing and hissing of fans of the Mother/EarthBound series on a worldwide scale. Shigesato Itoi, the Mother/EarthBound creator, responded to a question from a Japanese fan in regards to the creation of Mother 4, what would be the next entry in Itoi’s famed gaming series.
One Japanese fan sent Itoi this:
Basically, the fan is saying “Itoi-san, please tell me you’re making Mother 4.” Itoi’s response?
That’s “muri,” the Japanese equivalent of impossible. Itoi doesn’t go on to explain why, of course. He just says that Mother 4‘s development is impossible. One Japanese commenter on Jin115.com, the site that spotted Itoi’s tweet, put it best. “無慈悲,” that person said. “Ruthless.”
For franchise fans in the West, though, there is recent cause for celebration. Nintendo announced a few weeks ago that they finally intend to bring an EarthBound port to modern consoles. EarthBound will see a Virtual Console release on the Wii U by the end of 2013.
