A brand new proof-of-concept video from Microsoft Research demonstrates a lot of what their IllumiRoom technology can bring to the world of gaming.

Microsoft’s IllumiRoom is a genuine project. This isn’t like those fan-made concept videos that we see so often for high-end phone tech. This is a real project being done by Microsoft Research, and the video at the head of this post comes from their product page.

Of course, what Microsoft makes of this IllumiRoom technology is totally up in the air. They might use it in their next-gen Xbox, which we now know will be revealed on May 21st. Or, this could just be some tech that gets developed and then ignored.

Either way, the logistical side of the equation seems a little rough. Not everyone plays games in a living room with a coffee table. That would mean this projection system might need ceiling mounting, or a special surface to rest on. Creating a device that meets the needs of all consumers would be maddening.

What do you think of the concept?
