We published a BlackBerry roadmap over the weekend that suggested BlackBerry has two new smartphones and a new tablet coming down the pipeline. The first new smartphone, aside from the already announced BlackBerry Q10, will launch either in Q4 of this year or Q1 of next year. The second will launch during the second quarter of next year. But buried in that news is a “BlackBerry L” tablet that suggests the company is planning a successor to the BlackBerry PlayBook during the third or fourth quarter of this year.
That fits perfectly with rumors that a new PlayBook is already in the works, but also goes against comments from the company’s CEO that tablets are a “very difficult business” to compete in, especially with major players such as Apple and Samsung.
The firm’s annual developer conference BlackBerry Live kicks off in May, so we imagine we’ll hear more about the new PlayBook at that time. There are a few key areas BlackBerry will need to focus on: price, applications, interaction with BlackBerry smartphones and quick availability. Hopefully BlackBerry manages to nail all four.
