T-Mobile’s Galaxy S4 will support the carrier’s new 4G LTE network and now the carrier confirmed that its older Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphone also has support sitting dormant. T-Mobile USA issued an update Monday activating the required radio. It won’t work with 4G LTE just yet, you’ll need to wait for T-Mobile USA to flip the switch first, but once the network is live you’ll be good to go where LTE is available.
A T-Mobile engineer told The Verge that it gained the required spectrum for its 4G LTE network after the government failed to approve a planned acquisition by AT&T. Part of the deal required AT&T to pass over the spectrum should it fall through.
T-Mobile also recently received a green light from the FCC and a nod of approval from the Department of Justice for its planned merger with MetroPCS, which already has a 4G LTE network in the U.S.
