Mailbox, the iOS mail app that strived to help folks achieve Inbox Zero, has been acquired by Dropbox, the popular cloud service announced on Friday. When Mailbox burst onto the scene, users flocked to the app for its simplicity and unique take on email. And Dropbox saw the potential in the startup, saying in a statement that it wants to infuse Mailbox’s simplicity into its own service.
“It became clear that their calling was the same as ours at Dropbox-to solve life’s hidden problems and reimagine the things we do every day,” Dropbox said. “We all quickly realized that together we could save millions of people a lot of pain. There’s so much to do and we’re excited to get started.”
Details of the acquisition weren’t shared, and it’s unclear at this point how either product will be affected. Mailbox said in its own statement that the decision to join Dropbox is so the mail app can grow and reach more people.
“The product needs to grow fast, and we believe that joining Dropbox is the best way to make that happen,” Mailbox said. “Plus, imagine what cool things you could do if your Mailbox was connected to your Dropbox…”
Hopefully it’ll mean no lines to access the app, and maybe it will even lead to something on more platforms.
