A phone running a mobile operating system by Mozilla? No, you’re not dreaming and the company’s efforts are finally coming to fruition. We had a chance to meet with Alcatel to check out an entry-level device that will launch in emerging markets, but it gave us a good idea of what to expect from Firefox OS.

We’re told that the applications all run on HTML5, which means they’re basically web apps and there are thousands already available. It also ran surprisingly smooth on the device we had, which had just a 1GHz processor and 256MB of RAM. The display and camera weren’t great, but those sorts of specs need to remain low-end to keep a device cheap.

Alcatel didn’t confirm a partnership with Sprint — rumor has it the Now Network will launch a Firefox OS device – but it says it has plenty of partners and will roll out high-end Firefox OS devices in the future.
