Say you’re walking down the street and, unbeknownst to you, your buddy is not far away grabbing a bite to eat. In normal circumstances, you’d probably miss each other, maybe find out about it later. Facebook wants to eliminate these missed connections completely with a new app, so you and your friends know where Ashley and Brian and Chris are at all times.
According to Bloomberg, Facebook’s rumored app will track your location in the background and let you know when a friend is nearby. “Hey, Jon is close,” you might say. So you reach out on Facebook Messenger and wow technology is so super great. You met your friend who you may have otherwise missed.
Facebook’s terms already reserve the right to collect your information, so naturally an app is forthcoming. “We may put together your current city with GPS and other location information we have about you to, for example, tell you and your friends about people or events nearby, or offer deals to you that you might be interested in,” Facebook says.
Seeing as Facebook’s many users are opting for mobile use, it would make sense Zuckerberg would find a way to further keep users connected. It could lead to some very awkward situations, however. “I know you’re nearby,” you might message to a crush. “Facebook told me so.” That person would vehemently deny they’re down the street, and probably cease all communication with you forever.
