How fitting that “The Rise of Competitive Gaming & E-Sports” shows up a few days before the Big Game. What was once a market people participated in for leisure—to escape—gamers now compete in actual tournaments—for money, pride and bragging rights. The height of the video game industry has still yet to be reached—we may be heading into the next generation—making them one of the hottest topics around today.

It’s only going to go up from here.

PBS’s excellent Off Book series explores the world of competitive gaming, and the four main genres that dominate the landscape (shooters, RTS, MOBAs, and fighters). Who said video games were a waste of time? Many people have been making good money as professional gamers for years. This documentary explores that world, and the incredible stakes behind a simple fighting game.
