Despite suggestions to the contrary, Google+ is a flourishing and quickly growing social network. In fact, a new report from Global Web Index suggests that Google+ is now the second most used social network behind Facebook. The report also found that Twitter is the fastest growing social network, however, so it’s possible that it will actually surpass Google+ in the future to become the second most popular.
Facebook grew 33 percent last year to a base of 693 million “active users” in the 31 global markets tracked by Global Web Index. Meanwhile, Twitter’s active user base increased 40 percent to 288 million users in those markets, while Google+ grew 27 percent to 343 million users.
The story isn’t the same for local social networks, however. Tencent Weibo decreased 57 percent and drops were reported in South Africa, France, Japan and other countries that have local social networks.
