Project X is 2012′s Most Pirated Movie, Says Report

Project X, the over-the-top teen party flick that came out in March of this year, has been bestowed with the dubious honor of being 2012’s most pirated movie.  According to TorrentFreak, who collected a top ten of the year’s most download movies, Project X nearly topped out at 9 million downloads.

What’s impressive (sad?) about the figure is that the movie actually garnered the lowest worldwide gross among the other nine films, which includes The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and 21 Jump Street. TorrentFreak said that, overall, movie downloads have remained pretty consistent from last year, and will likely continue to stay that way.

With these figures in mind, there will always be the debate as to whether pirated movies negatively affect box office revenue. A study sourced by TorrentFreak from earlier in the year claims there is no adverse effect, but that’s always going to be argued. The Avengers, for example, amassed $1.5 billion in worldwide box office gross, while still securing the number 5 spot. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 rounded out the top ten, for whatever that’s worth.

  1. Project X
  2. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
  3. The Dark Knight Rises
  4. The Avengers
  5. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
  6. 21 Jump Street
  7. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  8. The Dictator
  9. Ice Age: Continental Drift
  10. The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1
