Wi-LAN, a Canadian intellectual property licensing company, filed a lawsuit against Research In Motion on Tuesday. The firm claims that the BlackBerry maker is infringing on patented technology related to Bluetooth communications. Wi-LAN didn’t explain much in a release published on its website, other than it believes RIM is infringing on U.S. Patent No. 6,260,168 and that it filed the lawsuit in the Southern District of Florida.

Wi-LAN believes that the BlackBerry PlayBook and several of RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones, including old devices such as the Pearl, Torch and Bold, infringe on the Bluetooth patent, Reuters said. WI-LAN is asking for injunctions against the products as well as damages, although it didn’t specifically say how much it wants from RIM.
